Left Behind
On one's personal journey, many things get left behind. Some of these things we no longer need and others have simply been forgotten - but the images stay and, often, leave a trail.......
This one of a kind raku and mixed media wall sculpture measures 12" high by 5 1/2" wide by 3 1/4" deep. The mask and individual "leaves" may be removed from the shadow box but I think that the box enhances and defines the piece. Either way, it is ready to hang.

A Little Night Owl
The little owl works through the night - just like so many artists we know! It's a good time to get things done, whether it be capturing those pesky mice or creating a work of art. The only interruptions are the voices calling quietly in the night....This is a multi fired raku piece and the size is 2 3/4" high by 2 3/8" wide.

Daydream in the Treehouse
Here, I've
combined two of my favorite themes: dreams and houses. It seems that my themes are evolving - so much so that I wonder about the beginnings of an idea and why it must be forever changing! Perhaps, like a dream, there is no telling which way it will go. There is no such thing as control.
The occupants of my treehouse are not that different from each other and yet each is an individual with a task to perform. I enjoy giving my dream subjects some responsibilities when I'm awake so that I can lie back and enjoy the view......

Animal Instincts
I'm baaaack! It's
been a busy two weeks with the ACC San Francisco show and some delightful after show visitors. I'm just now catching my breath and ready to get back to more regular posting! Today's mask is based on a piece that I made a few years ago. This version is smaller than the original....and that is a trend in my studio right now. I've been making some smaller (more affordable) works in the hope that they might be a bit easier on the pocketbook. I'm still making the larger masks, but I find myself spending more and more time on each piece. I was able to finish a few for this last show and I'll be revealing them soon.

Camouflage
This mask is about blending in...it's something I've never been very good at! In social situations, I usually think how nice it would be to have some sort of camouflage suit. Since that's unlikely, I'm becoming a little better at disguising my words and thoughts so as to appear normal. Working alone in the studio for 30 years has definitely taken its toll on me.
Today, I'm packing up for the show this weekend and at the same time, I'll be working on my mental camouflage.......

Animal Tendencies
Being an animal lover has led me to contemplate my own animal instincts. I know they exist, but I can't always put my finger on them. Since I believe that we have evolved from the animal kingdom, I think that we must have inherited quite a lot of genetic material from them. And then, when I look at groups of people interacting - I can't help but notice the herding instincts, the dominant male/female, the mating displays and so many more behaviors that we have in common.Hey, let's all gather round the watering hole!
Well, I have been a bit remiss with the blog this past week. It was difficult to find the time while I was on the road, but I'm baaaack!

Smoke Screen
When I made this piece, I
was thinking about the Redwood Highway in Northern California. It's a beautiful drive with trees all along the road...but behind this thin wall of trees, much of the area has been clear cut by logging companies. Our senses are fooled by the facade and I wanted this mask to be an allegory to remind myself that all is not what it seems.
I sold this mask 2 years ago and for some reason, it came to mind. I'm considering revisiting this idea very soon....
Raku today (i.e. playing with fire) and leaving for Oregon tomorrow!

The Merry Prankster
Here again, my coming
of age in the 60's is showing. I never was quite that "merry" but many of the concepts intrigued me and have stayed with me over the years. I like to think of the prankster as something that sneeks up from behind the persona and delivers a much needed dose of surprise and wonder. It is not so easy to dismiss the prankster because you never know when he/she will appear. The message is: it's important to keep an open mind.

The Lookout
I like the id
ea of having someone or some thing being the lookout. Here, I was thinking about how a flock of birds or animals are warned of danger by one of the group. The bird, for me, represents my own instincts always on the lookout.
This mask is one of my first forays into "naked raku" (a technique that involves peeling away a slip/glaze combination after the raku firing). The process is very exciting since you never know how it will turn out and it couldn't be duplicated if you tried!

Under the Influence
I've found that when yo
u're under the influence, even a mask won't help! Although, depending on what that "influence" is, it might make you feel a little less obvious. I've always had trouble blending in with society and perhaps that is because my influences are just a wee bit disturbing for some. In any case, I have learned to be a little less obviously "out there" and the masks have been therapeutic in that respect.
The mask was made in two parts and joined after finishing. This is because I couldn't mix the naked raku of the lower face with the gold luster in the "hat". Any refiring after the raku will burn out all of the wonderful smoke patterns.

On the Way to the Masked Fall
If you haven't noticed
, I love plays on words and phrases. Even though many times they are cliches, they have become a part of our tradition and I respect that.
Without a doubt, this is an autumn mask. Instead of going to a ball, this leaf is headed for a fall (in disguise). I had a great time working on this and trying out some new combinations. It is very satisfying mixing up my own glazes and trying for different effects. I hope that it keeps my work from becoming boring, for me or for the viewer.
The final firing was raku - the branch is from a tree in my yard.

By Any Other Name....
A rose is a rose is
a rose - and roses are sweet....this is about as "girly" as my work gets! There are times when I just can't resist doing something pretty and flowery. I also rely heavily on literary references, so it was natural to combine the two in this mask.
Even though I'm not much of a girly girl or even much of a rose, I appreciate the idea. And, we all have something inside that is special - even if it isn't always apparent.
This piece is a combination of laquer resisted stoneware and raku. The parts were assembled post firing.

Night Owl
This mask is a close
relative of "Birdgirl"....perhaps a cousin or a sister. I can't seem to resist the birds showing up in my work - maybe because they represent, for me, the ultimate freedom.
The night owl thrives at night for it is a time of quiet and rejuvenation. All things seem possible in the stillness, and then there are the dreams where one can soar.
The mask was made using the "naked raku" technique.
